⌐ Copyright applies to the E-motion* original music presented here, which was composed using the VC. You are welcome to make AIFF copies, produce them using Felt Tip Studio or something similar, and burn to CD, so long as it is for personal use only, and strictly not for commercial purposes or distribution.
How the "E-motion" scores are mixed and joined to make full stereo AIFF music files.
General examples of how to mix and join virtual scores as stereo AIFF's are given in the Virtual Composer Manual. (AIFF is the standard format for CD quality music production.) It is recommended you carefully read those through first, to make sure you know how to split the files into dual mono then remix them for the purpose of sending selected channels either to stereo left, right, or middle in the finished full stereo AIFF. Once a stereo AIFF is created, it can be further enhanced, even fully produced, with sound studio effects such as are available in the Felt Tip Studio application. The notes here are meant to be suggestive for virtual composers who, for example, might want to fully realise and present their own finished work as an audio CD. If the stereo mix, joining, and studio sound production notes given here are followed through exactly as given, the results, especially when burned to CD (thus cutting out any incidental background noise from your computer) should be high quality.
A note on individual instrument volume settings: these might not sound quite right in an unmixed AIFF. The levels have been carefully selected to anticipate full stereo production, which sends instruments either to left, right or middle. "Middle" setting increases volume, while "left" or "right" decreases, overall.
(Ioannis Note: To fully produce Aeon's Suite, please check the option "Honor Repeats" in the "Play->Preferences..." dialog, so that all repeats are played correctly).
1. Don Juan
The score is written in one document, 8 channels. It includes "repeat meaures". At full length, the piece plays at 2.31.
Ch.1-3 Acoustic Grand Piano
Ch.4 Cello
Ch.5 Cello
Ch.6 Trumpet
Ch.7 Orchestra
Ch.8 Orchestra
For the stereo mix in AIFF: Channels 1-3 (piano) send to the middle (i.e. in both left and right channels); channels 4 and 5 (cellos) send to the middle; channel 6 (trumpet) send to left; channels 7 and 8 (orchestral strings) send to the right.
Felt Tip Studio Production: Add a filter delay to both channels at 0.3 and 12% strength for a deep "Mexican" sound. (This setting does for most things as an overall studio gloss, or "deep reverb", when required. Note that 0.3 is a "big" delay setting - any more than 15% strength on 0.3 will begin to sound ludicrous unless your piece is "experimental". By way of comparison, as little as 0.03 gives an "empty space ambience" with strength set to 50%. Note that the echo settings can only seriously be used on individual instruments, whereas delay can be added to multiple instruments for a good finished production effect.)
2. Walpurga
The score is written in one document, 6 channels.
Ch.1 Acoustic String Ensemble
Ch.2-4 Acoustic Grand Piano
Ch.5 Acoustic String Ensemble
Ch.6 Orchestra
For stereo AIFF mixing, send channel 1 to the left; channels 2-5 send to middle; channel 6 to right.
Felt Tip Studio Production: For my finished CD, I added a filter delay, both channels, at 0.3 at 12% strength.
Note: The "Quicktime bug" made it impossible to have this play at the right tempo and not have the AIFF file playing 20-30 seconds of silence at the end. However, the music itself is not affected, so it is a simple matter to trim the excess bars in Felt Tip Studio. Make sure, though, whenever you do this, to leave a second or two of silence at the end if the delay filter is being used as a production effect. This also applies to any piece (regardless of whether the QT bug is present or not) where you add filter delay or echo effects - always make sure there is a second or two of silence at the end. (The Felt Tip Studio has an "add silence" option which does this very neatly.)
3. Georges
The score is written in one document, 7 channels:
Ch.1-4 Acoustic Grand Piano
Ch.5 Acoustic Fretless Bass
Ch.7-8 Acoustic String Ensemble
For stereo AIFF mixing, send channels 1 to 4 to middle; channel 5 to the left; channels 6 and 7 to the right.
Felt Tip Studio Production: Add a filter delay to both channels of 0.3 at 12% for a deep concert sound on the piano and bass.
4. Invocation Project
The score is written in four documents, parts a, b, c and d.
Part a, "12/8 Intro", 3 channels:
Ch.1-3 Acoustic Grand Piano
Part b, "4/4 Theme", 8 channels:
Ch.1-5 Acoustic Grand Piano
Ch.6 Cello
Ch.7 Cello
Ch.8 Orchestra
Part c, "12/8 Cadenza", 3 channels:
Ch.1-3 Acoustic Grand Piano
Part d, "12/8 Finale", 8 channels:
Ch.1-5 Acoustic Grand Piano
Ch.6 Cello
Ch.7 Cello
Ch.8 Orchestra
The "4/4 Theme" has "repeat measures" included, and also has a section with a rallentando in the middle of the music. This is not usually recommended, as it may often desynchronise the whole score! (Even at the end of a piece it can be tricky sometimes, especially when converting to AIFF. See the VC Manual for more on the use of the accelerando.)
For stereo AIFF mixing, apply the following: Part a, channels 1-3 (acoustic grand piano) send to middle.
Part b: channels 1-5 (acoustic grand piano) send to middle; channels 6 and 7 (cellos) send to left; channel 8 (orchestra) send to right.
Part c: channels 1-3 (acoustic grand piano) send to middle.
Part d: channels 1-5 (acoustic grand piano) send to middle; channels 6 and 7 (cellos) send to left; channel 8 (orchestra) send to right.
Joining the files: Parts a and b, then join ab to c, then abc to a, then abca to d, so the complete piece is a-b-c-a-d.
Felt Tip Studio Production: Add a filter delay to both channels at 0.3 at 12% strength for a nice studio "gloss" overall.
5. Phantasy
The score is written in one document, 4 channels:
Ch.1 SynStrings2
Ch.2 SynStrings3
Ch.3 Syn Strings3
Ch.4 Fretless Bass
Stereo mix in AIFF: Send channel 1 to middle; channel 2 to right; channel 3 to right; channel 4 to left. This gives a broad, sweeping sound, which is the desired effect as complimentary to the music.
Felt Tip Studio Production: none required as these sounds are already "ambient". (Note that some of the QT instruments come with a "dry" sound, such as the acoustic nylon guitar and flute, whereas others are "wet" or "ambient", such as are all of the sounds in the "synth pad" range. A good pair of stereo headphones is one essential item for stereo mixing and production.)
6. Rhapsody
The score is written in one document, 8 channels:
Ch.1-4 Acoustic Grand Piano
Ch.5 Orchestra
Ch.6 Orchestra
Ch.7 Acoustic Fretless Bass
Ch.8 Cello
For the stereo AIFF mix apply the following: Channels 1-4 send to middle; channels 5 and 6 to the middle; channel 7 to left; channel 8 to right.
Felt Tip Studio Production: A lush "studio gloss" with filter delay at 0.3 at 12% strength, both channels.
7. Aum Shiva Project
The score is written in three documents, parts a, b and c. Note that part b includes "repeat measures".
Part a, "Mantram", 13 channels:
Ch.1 Sitar
Ch.2 Flute 1
Ch.3 Flute 2
Ch.4 Echoes
Ch.5 Reverse Cymbal
Ch.6 - 10 Acoustic Nylon Guitar
Ch.11 Orchestra
Ch.12 Orchestra
Ch.13 Brightness
Part b, "Atmadarshana", 13 channels:
Ch.1-6 Acoustic Grand Piano
Ch.7 Orchestra
Ch.8 Orchestra
Ch.9 Cello
Ch.10 Cello
Ch.11 Echoes
Ch.12 Reverse Cymbal
Ch.13 Brightness
Part c, "Shivadarshana", 4 Channels:
Ch.1 Echoes
Ch.2 Reverse Cymbal
Ch.3 Bird Tweet
Ch.4 Seashore
Ch.5 Brightness
For the stereo mix in AIFF apply the following: Part a, channel 1 (sitar) send to middle; channels 2 and 3 (flutes) send left, channel 4 (echoes) send to middle, channel 5 (reverse cymbal) send to middle, channels 6-10 (acoustic nylon guitar) send to left, channels 11 and 12 (orchestra) send to the right, and channel 13 (brightness) send to middle.
Part b: channels 1-6 (acoustic grand piano) send to middle; channels 7 and 8 (orchestra) to right; channels 9 and 10 (cellos) to middle; channel 11 (echoes) to middle; channel 12 (reverse cymbal) to middle; channel 13 (brightness) to middle.
Part c: channel 1 (echoes) to middle; channel 2 (reverse cymbal) to middle, channel 3 (bird tweet) to right; channel 4 (seashore) to left; channel 5 (brightness) to middle.
Joining the files: Join a and b, then join ab to c, so the complete piece is a-b-c.
Felt Tip Studio Production: Add filter delay to both channels of 0.3 at 15% strength, to plunge the whole thing into deep cosmic space.
8. Pearl Drop
The score is written in one document, 10 channels:
Ch.1-6 Acoustic grand piano
Ch.7-8 Acoustic string ensemble
Ch.9-10 Cello
For the stereo AIFF mix apply the following: Channels 1-6 (piano) send to middle; channels 7-8 (strings) send to right; channels 9-10 (cello) send to middle.
Felt Tip Studio Production: Add a filter delay to both channels of 0.3 at 12% strength. (The AIFF file will require a few seconds snipping from the end, but as always, make sure to leave one or two seconds after the last note has faded to allow for the delay reverberation effect.)
